Conscious Business of the Week: Sustainable Adventure by Escape Adventures

06.22.2009 | Author: Shirly Weiss | Posted in Conscious Business of the Week, Environment, Exercise, Travel & Leisure

onion_creekWhat happens when you get vegetable-oil-fueled wagons trailing cyclists, hikers and multi-sport adventure seekers through national parks and country roads in the States and worldwide?  Eco-responsibility that has never been more fun!

But vegetable fueled support vehicles are just a miniscule part of what this sustainable adventure outfitter is doing to minimize footprint on the environment while maximizing adventure.  Named the world’s first carbon neutral outfitter, Escape Adventures, takes their love for adventure and the environment to everywhere they travel in every way they can.

Outdoor enthusiasts can rest their limbs more calmly at night knowing that simply by joining a tour with this conscious business, the scenic back roads and hill country they love to explore will be preserved.  And don’t fret if you aren’t an athlete… Escape Adventures has tours for every kind of outdoor lover and level of fitness.

Sustainable Adventure for Everyone

Escape Adventures is truly a conscious business with sincere commitment to serve the triple bottom line.  And clearly their consideration for their people and their planet is amounting to both profit and recognition.

National Geographic Adventure Magazine ranked them as one of the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth giving them superb scores in quality of service, sustainability and overall customer satisfaction.  They were also named the Sustainable Travel International STEP program’s highest rated eco-certified Tour Operator.

So what is this sustainable adventure provider doing to get such accolades?

First is their focus on fun!  You can tell these guys love what they do and love sharing it.  Their tours and destinations show their dedication to finding hidden natural gems and providing breath-taking adventures in the backcountry of our world.

The primary activities offered on their tours are biking for those who want to experience the outdoors in unique, exciting ways, and cycling for experiencing coastline, serenity and culture on the most scenic roads around.  And the fun doesn’t stop there…

They have tours featuring hiking for every fitness level for those who desire to take in nature at a different pace. They offer multi-sport tours that provide a variety of activities such as rafting, biking, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing for those who want to a taste of it all.

They also offer introductory tours that place emphasis on learning new skills while providing a relaxed pace for those new to biking or adventure tours. These tours are also great for those who want to introduce a friend or loved one to multi-sport or bike touring, and for families who want to tour together.

And when you see they also offer women specific tours, family getaways and private custom-made packages, you realize they have something for every body and soul.  Talk about a conscious business that knows how to please their customers…all while having and providing fun!  Are these guys smart or what?

Sustainable Adventure that Leaves No Trace

Yes, the folks at Escape Adventures may seem to have their focus on adventure and fun but there is one thing they take very seriously, environmental preservation.  A conscious business with a clearly values-driven mission, they take every possible step to ensure their tours are environmentally sound and carbon neutral… and this is how:

As mentioned, first off is their fleet of support vehicles.  They are the first and only outfitter in America using vegetable oil fueled support vehicles.  The clean burning, naturally renewable plant oil used in their cars is gathered from restaurants saving this oil (and our planet) the fate of being sent to landfills.

Once out in the wild, EA does everything possible to ensure ecosystem and biodiversity conservation where they travel.  For example, they strictly avoid touring areas where wildlife may be disturbed, ensure wildlife never reaches tour food, leave zero litter behind and educated all their customers on how to leave no trace.

Since touring is synonymous with travel and travel is often linked with fuel, AE is also meticulous when it comes to fuel usage outside their own eco-vehicles.   For example, when EA employees must air travel to a tour area, they offset the carbon emissions by prepaying for greentags and plant trees for each flight.  They also encourage local employees with daily cash incentives to take public transportation or bicycles to work.

Back home in the EA offices, all products used are purchased locally, recycled, organic and bought from other conscious businesses when at all possible.  They also have committed solar cells running their Moab based operations and bicycle shop and their Las Vegas based bike tour warehouse.   They also recycle 90% of the waste produced on tours and buy greentags to make up for the other 10%.

Here to Have Fun for Good

Yet again, Escape Adventures is another clear example of a value-based conscious business caring for its employees, customer and earth with dedication, joy and willingness.  Sustainable fun is good business in our mind.
