Sustainable Landscape Architecture by Sacred Gardens

05.02.2009 | Author: Shirly Weiss | Posted in Conscious Business of the Week, Environment

sustainable landscape drawingSustainable landscape architecture is a practice that naturally embodies the principles of consciousness and holistic, systems thinking.  It is a fusion of design, life science and technological philosophies that aim to create spaces that enhance the relationship between the built and natural environment while caring for the planet’s landscapes in a holistic, imaginative and sustainable way.

Such a landscape architect should have a broad understanding of space, natural systems and the socio-cultural environment.  Possessing just such a diverse background, Denise Nura Loy Buchanan, the owner of Sacred Gardens Landscape in Los Angeles, CA, is the ideal embodiment of a true landscape architect and a conscious business owner alike.

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology, it is easy to see how Nura Loy channels a wide range of knowledge and collective understandings through her work as a Landscape Architect; qualities that immediately make her stand out both as a designer and advocate for health and harmony all around.

Nura Loy has been rejuvenating landscapes into scenic environments that help sustain the planet and soothe the body and mind for over ten years.  She has worked both with new and existing construction, working at all levels of the planning and designing of tourist resorts, greenways, community parks and commercial and government projects.  Her vitality, enthusiasm and knowledge in creating landscapes that fit with the site has led her to work in numerous projects throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean and to be featured on HGTV’s “Ground Rules.”

A Conscious Business Owner with Spirit and Heart!

Growing up in humble surroundings in Jamaica led Nuro Loy to develop a deep appreciation both for the spiritual essence of life and for nature.  This unique combination formed the foundation for her work as a landscape architect and her calling to design healing garden spaces.

With a vivacious spirit and love for what she does, Nura Loy’s primary intention is to create beauty and healing through her landscape designs.  One of the principle messages of her work is the importance of cultivating our outer garden as we tend to our inner gardens.

To Nura Loy, creating outer environments, such as meditative spaces and restorative garden settings that nurture, revive and support each individual’s growth and development are one of the many ways in which she is of service to her community and planet.  In addition to being a gifted landscape designer, Nura Loy is also a healer, poet, public speaker and a teacher in the Shadhdhuliyyah Sufi Order.  Her life is filled with an earnest desire to assist others along their journey to fully claim their gifts, inner beauty and power and live the life of love they were born to lead.

Whether she is working directly with people or landscapes, it is clear that she brings a deep compassion and loving to all her work.  Her understanding of human behavior, nature and her intuition provide her with a unique capacity to understand environments both inside and out.  Through her work, Nura Loy shares these abilities and her wide-ranging life experience as a “witness to the power of Spirit to transform lives.”

Landscape Architecture: A Powerful yet often Overlooked Profession

Given that the duty of a landscape architect is to use design in order for a structure or development to sit comfortably in its surrounding environment, by its very nature, the work is often overlooked.  However, when one understands the power and importance of this work in terms of its benefit to the holistic bottom line that equally considers profit, employees, customers and the planet, the advantage of hiring an experienced and capable landscape architect is easily seen.

Practitioners such as Denise Nura Loy take their profession to the limits of its power with just such a holistic approach.  Her work radiates this integrated understanding of systems that in the end results in much more than beautiful flowers and plants.  Through her comprehensive, heart-centered approach to sustainable landscape architecture, she is a living example of one of the myriad ways that conscious business can make this world a healthier and more vibrant place.

I’m so delighted to find out about your work! You seem to have a much deeper understanding of creating gardens than I see in design magazines - more holistic and in touch with balance and flow. I’m going to follow up on your website to hopefully see examples of your work. Bravo!
